The Department of Geography at the Faculty of Science and Letters, Uşak University, was established concurrently with the opening of the Faculty of Science and Letters and began admitting students in the 2002–2003 academic year. It graduated its first class in the 2006–2007 academic year. Pursuant to Presidential Decree No. 7477, published in the Official Gazette No. 32269 on August 4, 2023, the Faculty of Science and Letters was closed, and the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences was established.  Consequently, starting in 2023, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, through its Department of Geography, admits 40 students annually.

The Institute of Social Sciences at Uşak University offers master’s and doctoral programs in the Department of Geography, with a large number of students currently enrolled in these programs.

The Geography Department’s undergraduate program comprises the sub-disciplines of Human and Economic Geography, Physical Geography, Geography of Turkey, and Regional Geography. The department has a total of 8 academic staff members, consisting of 3 professors, 2 associate professors, 1 assistant professor, 1 instructor, and 1 doctoral research assistant. The number of academic staff in the Geography Department represents an ideal faculty size for a department of this kind.

To graduate, students must complete 240 ECTS credits from a program consisting of required and elective courses. While first-year undergraduate students take courses covering the fundamentals of geography, courses covering specialized topics are offered in subsequent years. To graduate, students are required to participate in field trips and observation activities organized by the department.

Faculty members in the Department of Geography are conducting numerous scientific projects. Interested and motivated students are given the opportunity to work on scientific projects to gain project experience or expand their geographical knowledge.

To adapt to changing conditions, emphasis is placed on information technologies. To this end, GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and RS (Remote Sensing) courses are offered in the Geographic Information Systems Technologies Laboratory. Students who acquire a solid foundation here develop multidisciplinary work skills.

 Faculty members working in the Department maintain a laboratory environment featuring rock, soil, and plant specimens they have collected throughout their academic careers. In this environment, which is always accessible, our students are able to satisfy their curiosity.

As part of the Human Geography Fieldwork and Physical Geography Fieldwork courses, fieldwork is conducted every week at predetermined stations. Students compile reports on the topics covered during these sessions and submit them to the relevant instructor. Efforts are made to address any shortcomings observed in the students’ reports. The best photograph taken by students during the fieldwork is selected, and the students’ work is rewarded. This serves to encourage the students’ efforts.

The Department of Geography places great importance on senior theses. Care is taken to ensure that these works are original. Theses, which are prepared entirely within a scientific framework, are presented by the students themselves at scientific events such as symposia and conferences. This provides students with the opportunity to express their knowledge in front of an audience.
